Rockhampton, QLD, 14th July, 2008 – Yesterday it was the Queensland Yamaha Girls Team who dominated round three of the QLD Women’s Natural Terrain Championships (Thunder X) with Tamara Gray and Brooke Thiemann taking the top podium positions.
Prime track conditions and unusually warm weather greeted the girls at Alton Downs, Rockhampton where Tamara Gray (CityYamaha/Race Elements) made a return to motocross after being sidelined for eight weeks with a broken wrist.
Gray managed to claim all three hole shots of the day and take the respective wins, but not after being challenged in each moto by her team mate Brooke Thiemann (City Yamaha/Men at Work) who over recent weeks has really found her confidence and speed.
With Gray and Thiemann battling up front, the duo of Yamaha blue and Fox pink were able to leave third place rider Prue Maeyke over thirty seconds behind by race’s end.
“Today was tough for me. I was struggling with the pain and weakness of my wrist as the track deteriorated, but I managed to tough it out and do what I had to do to put myself in a good position for the final two rounds of the championship. It was also great to see Brooke charging hard today, she didn’t make my job easy today.” Laughed an exhausted Gray.
“I had a fantastic day today, I had a great time on the track and really enjoyed racing with Tam today. I learnt a lot from racing with her throughout the day. We really pushed hard together and stepped above the rest of the field.” An elated Thiemann spoke at day’s end.
This year’s QLD Women’s Natural Terrain Championships is run over a ‘best of three’ rounds out of the five round championship. This has occurred due to date clashes with the Australian Women’s Motocross Championships and the Australian Off-Road Championships. With three rounds down Thiemann currently leads the series. With two rounds to go it is possible for Gray to challenge her team mate for the Championship.
The final two rounds are Kingaroy August 17 and Mundubberra September 14.
