Yesterday QLD Yamaha Girls Team rider’s Tamara Gray (City Yamaha) and Brooke Thiemann (City Yamaha) aboard their YZ250F‘s tried their hand at dirt track for the first time, racing the Queensland Dirt Track Championship held at Mick Doohan Raceway North Brisbane.

After a rough start on an unfamiliar set up and surface, and amidst a full grid of twelve riders, Gray narrowly missed a podium position in the women’s all powers class and finished in fourth.

Gray also entered the up to 250cc four stroke class and managed to qualify for the final, where only the top 12 rider’s were selected.

“After practise and the first round of racing, I wasn’t sure if dirt track was for me. I persisted with it and after a few more rides I started to get the hang of it. Each ride I felt I definitely rode stronger, I wasn’t getting the best starts and I feel if I work on them I can be very competitive”. Gray commented at day’s end.

Brooke Thiemann raced an enjoyable day placing 8th in a field mostly comprised of very experienced dirt track racers.

“I had an absolute blast today. The racing with all the girls was incredibly close, much closer than in motocross. I will definitely endeavour to do more of these types of events in the future”. Thiemann commented after the day’s racing.

Yamaha was indeed well represented yesterday, with fellow blue rider’s Kiera Smith (Burdekin Motorcycles) narrowly taking the win, Megan Doyle placing second and Samantha Van Eerde rounding out the top five.
